Our Projects

From humble beginnings in a rented building, The Roof of Africa has grown into a charity supporting multiple education projects and communities across Tanzania.

Not only do we now have our own successful pre and primary school in Sonu, but we are also supporting other important projects, including a day care centre and the development of a Maasai school to bring education to even more children in remote areas.

Our reputation for delivering high-quality education continues to grow, with more families and communities seeking support and opportunities for their children. None of this would be possible without the generosity, belief, and continued support of our sponsors, donors, and fundraising community.

Together, we are creating opportunities, transforming lives, and helping children build brighter futures through education.

Our flagship school project - the pre and primary roof of Africa school

The school first opened its doors in June 2016 in a rented building, with 68 children registered. What started as a small beginning quickly grew into something much bigger, driven by the determination to provide children with access to education and a brighter future.

In April 2018, construction began on our own permanent school building, and in January 2020 we proudly welcomed pupils into their new classrooms for the very first time.

Today, the school has nearly 300 registered pupils. We currently have five completed classrooms, with two additional rooms originally intended for administration now also being used as classrooms due to growing demand.

Following recent education reforms in Tanzania, the need to provide free, accessible, and high-quality education has become more important than ever. The challenge ahead is significant, and there is still much more to build and achieve — but with your support, we can continue creating opportunities and changing lives through education.e Roof of Africa School is located in Sonu, a small rural village in Tanzania.

Teaching is delivered in English, but for many pupils this is their second or even third language. In East Africa, high schools teach in English so learning from a young age can be very beneficial.

Day-to-day, students are taught English, Maths and Kiswahli. Though, the children also enjoy sports, arts and singing. They love showing off paintings that they have created and welcoming visitors - usually with handmade instruments and rhymes that they have learnt!

Surrounding the school are luscious green gardens. Here, we grow fruit and vegetables to supplement the two free meals that the students receive each day. They are nourished and looked after by the school community.

Expansion Project

The school hit maximum capacity in 2018, leading us to start work on a new building to accommodate more children and higher age classes.

In January 2020, the students of The Roof of Africa School moved out of the rented building and into the new site. Currently the school has six classrooms. In total we aim to have nine classrooms; two at nursery level and seven at primary.

There are many ways that you can be part of our journey in building The Roof of Africa School. Whether you are able to hold a fundraiser, sponsor a child, make a donation or volunteer, you will be helping to shape a future for the children of The Roof of Africa School and support their families.

RaisING The Roof

Just like our students and the crops we harvest, The Roof of Africa School is growing! We need some helping hands and would love for you to join us.

Four additional classrooms are required to accommodate students from nursery to Standard 7 to establish The Roof of Africa School fully. Due to the lack of space, the current situation sees two administration blocks being used as classrooms. The construction of four new classrooms is essential to return these blocks to their intended administrative use and ensure the school can serve all students effectively. Each classroom is estimated to cost £44,000, covering land preparation, materials (cement, bricks, roofing, windows, doors), electrical installations, interior finishes (flooring, plastering, painting), furniture (desks, chairs), and labour, as well as all internet systems and infrastructure set up. The total cost of constructing four classrooms is £176,000. Choose below how you can become our donor and partner to continue making our mission possible.

There are other plenty of ways that you can get involved by visiting our Total Giving page, or exploring ways to Get Involved. Donations of £100 or more will be honoured with your name presented on our fundraising materials as we watch the project develop. Your name will also be lovingly hand painted on to the school building once it is complete. So, be sure to sign up to our newsletter updates on the build at the time of donation.

We hope you can help us raise the roof, one brick at a time.
