Our Projects

Our goal is to provide children in Sonu access to a free education from qualified teachers, as well as two meals a day.

In June 2016, The Roof Of Africa school opened its doors to 68 children in a rented building.

In April 2018, we began construction on our own permanent school. The building welcomed the first children in January 2020, and is continuing to grow.

The Roof of Africa school

The Roof of Africa School is located in Sonu, a small rural village in Tanzania.

Set against the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, the school currently teaches over 100 children across four classes ranging from nursery to Primary 4. We are committed to smaller class sizes to enable the highest quality teaching available for every student.

Teaching is delivered in English, but for many pupils this is their second or even third language. In East Africa, high schools teach in English so learning from a young age can be very beneficial.

Day-to-day, students are taught English, Maths and Kiswahli. Though, the children also enjoy sports, arts and singing. They love showing off paintings that they have created and welcoming visitors - usually with handmade instruments and rhymes that they have learnt!

Surrounding the school are luscious green gardens. Here, we grow fruit and vegetables to supplement the two free meals that the students receive each day. They are nourished and looked after by the school community.

You can read more about Tanzania and the location of the school, here.

Expansion Project

The school hit maximum capacity in 2018, leading us to start work on a new building to accommodate more children and higher age classes.

In January 2020, the students of The Roof of Africa School moved out of the rented building and into the new site. Currently the school has six classrooms. In total we aim to have nine classrooms; two at nursery level and seven at primary.

There are many ways that you can be part of our journey in building The Roof of Africa School. Whether you are able to hold a fundraiser, sponsor a child, make a donation or volunteer, you will be helping to shape a future for the children of The Roof of Africa School and support their families.

RaisING The Roof

Just like our students and the crops that we harvest, The Roof of Africa School is growing! We need some helping hands and would love for you to help us on our way.

We currently have six classrooms completed, although some will need window panes added at a later date. The foundations have been laid for the remaining three classes. By January 2022 we hope to complete the seventh classroom, which will enable pupils to continue their education. To finish the seventh classroom we need £4,317.63. The final two class rooms will cost £5,017.73 each. So in total, we need to raise £14,353.09

There are plenty of ways that you can get involved by visiting our Total Giving page, or exploring ways to Get Involved. Donations of £100 or more will be honoured with your name presented on our fundraising materials as we watch the project develop. Your name will also be lovingly hand painted on to the school building once it is complete. So, be sure to sign up to our newsletter updates on the build at the time of donation.

We hope you can help us raise the roof, one brick at a time.
