Why I joined The Roof of Africa

Over the past few years, my friend Donna, who is a Trustee at The Roof of Africa, has often shared stories about the incredible work the charity is doing and the lives it is changing in Tanzania. I've always been amazed that such a small charity can achieve so much with such limited resources.

Earlier this year, Donna told me that two Trustees were stepping down and asked whether I would be interested in joining the Board. (Although, I suspect she'd already decided what role she wanted me to take on!) We'd talked before about me wanting to volunteer for a charity, so after learning more about the opportunity, I didn't hesitate to say yes.

One of the highlights was meeting Genuine, the charity's founder, online. Hearing first-hand about the passion, commitment and vision behind The Roof of Africa inspired me even more and confirmed that I'd made the right decision.

Like all our Trustees, I work full-time alongside my volunteer role. That makes The Roof of Africa the perfect fit for me, as I can contribute flexibly around my work and family commitments while still making a meaningful difference.

After joining the Board, Donna suggested I become our Supporter Manager. My role is to keep our wonderful supporters updated with news about the children and families they sponsor, sharing the difference their generosity is making. I'm also looking forward to welcoming new supporters and helping more people discover the impact they can have through regular giving.

One of the things that impressed me most about The Roof of Africa is that every penny donated through public fundraising goes directly to supporting children and families in Tanzania. Whether it's providing education, helping families stay together or offering practical support, donations are used where they are needed most.

In my day job as an Estates & Stewardship Manager for a housing association, I see the challenges many families face here in the UK. It makes me appreciate even more the difficulties experienced by vulnerable children and families in Tanzania. What really stands out to me is the strength of the communities there and the charity's commitment to family reunification. Rather than children growing up in orphanages, The Roof of Africa works tirelessly to keep children within a loving family environment wherever possible—a truly life-changing approach.

I was also amazed to learn that the charity has no paid staff in the UK. Everything from fundraising to promoting the charity is carried out by dedicated volunteers who generously give their time. Knowing this makes the achievements of The Roof of Africa even more remarkable.

I'm excited to help build stronger relationships with our supporters, showing them the real difference they are making to children's lives, while encouraging others to become part of our charity family.
